The Green Valley High School Alumni Foundation was proud to award our 2019 scholarship to Ms. Irene Wang! We invite you to learn more about Irene and her Commitment to Excellence, in her own words, below!
Being a first generation immigrant, I have always worked extra hard trying to assimilate into American culture since my arrival back in 6th grade. By the time I entered Green Valley High School, my English was fluent enough for me to now take on the most challenging courses. With English being my second language, the vast amount of reading was a challenge. I took longer than my peers to read the same amount of material, but I also paid more attention to what I was reading. I meticulously took an extensive amount of notes to help myself prepare for the reading quizzes, and my hard work was reflected in my grade and teacher’s recognition. I’ve managed to get 5s on most of my AP exams, which encouraged me to further my pursuit up the academic ladder.
Although I took a fall last year from my worsening depression, I was able to make up the work as soon as possible. I was able to pass all of my AP exams with the exception of one and end the semester with 4 As. I learned to move on with my life despite the crippling amount of stress life can throw at you and never stop moving forward towards one’s goal.
I am thankful for the support and understanding of my teachers that allowed me to recover quickly. I have always maintained a close relationship with my teachers throughout high school by coming to their classrooms after school for help and address any problems that I am struggling with. Because of their commitment to excellence, plus my own, I was able to achieve my maximum potential and show the world who I truly am.
